WHAT IS GUM DISEASE ?

Gum disease is extremely common, so if you have some form of gum disease, you’re not alone.

Gum disease is a chronic infection of the gums often caused by a build-up of bacteria (or plaque) on your teeth and under the gum line for long periods of time. The best way to remove plaque is to brush and floss your teeth daily. However, regardless of how well you clean your teeth there will always be areas that are hard to reach. Plaque can build up until it turns into calculus (or tartar). This is impossible to remove by brushing and flossing alone. Gum disease can cause periodontal tissues to breakdown which can lead to receding gums and it’s the number one cause of adult tooth loss. While there is no cure for advanced-stage gum disease (periodontitis), we can help you manage it with periodontal treatment.

HOW IS GUM DISEASE RELATED TO OVERALL HEALTH ?

Gum disease has been linked to several systemic illnesses, including heart disease and diabetes. Studies show that patients with gum disease are twice as likely to develop heart disease. The exact link is unclear, but studies suggest that bacteria enters the bloodstream through the gums, causing arteries to swell, elevating blood sugar levels, and contributing to secondary infections. Scientists also think the body’s inflammatory response to gum disease can trigger other inflammatory diseases like heart disease and diabetes. Based on your particular requirements your Dentist and Dental Hygienist will make recommendations for how often you should have your visits.

PERIODONTAL AND GUM TREATMENT

We provide scaling services to remove plaque and calculus from your teeth and gums. Our dentist or hygienist may also place antibiotics in the periodontal pockets to battle infection. In severe cases, surgery may be required, and we can refer you to a periodontist (gum specialist) for specialized periodontal treatment.

If you have gum disease, all is not lost! You can maintain good oral health by attending regular cleanings, and brushing and flossing daily. We will help you reduce your symptoms and prevent gum disease from advancing.
